Remy gets new NESN deal with 115-game schedule

Boston Red Sox TV analyst Jerry Remy has agreed to a new multiyear contract.

Cable network NESN announced the deal on Wednesday and said the 64-year-old Remy will remain its primary color analyst and work 115 Red Sox games each season.

The length and other terms of the contract were not released.

Remy, a former Boston second baseman, has worked more than 3,900 Red Sox games during his broadcast career.

He missed numerous games in recent years while battling health issues, including lung cancer. He also took time off while dealing with the legal problems of his son, Jared, who is serving a life term in prison after pleading guilty in 2014 to the murder of his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel.

The team said Wednesday the free-agent slugger had agreed to an $18.5 million, one-year contract that includes mutual options for 2018 and 2019.

The 36-year-old Bautista hit 22 homers with 69 RBI last year while batting .234 in an injury-plagued season.

• Outfielder Brandon Guyer signed a two-year contract with the Indians that includes a club option for 2019. Guyer was acquired from Tampa Bay in a trade on Aug. 1 and provided offensive punch and defensive depth down the stretch for Cleveland.

• Infielder Trevor Plouffe agreed to a one-year contract with Oakland and is expected to be the primary third baseman if he can stay healthy.

• Right fielder Kole Calhoun and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a $26 million, three-year contract, reworking a $6.35 million, one-year deal agreed to last week that avoided salary arbitration.

PGA: Phil Mickelson is set to play the CareerBuilder Challenge in California, returning from two sports hernia surgeries a week earlier than he originally expected.

The 46-year-old Mickelson had surgery Oct. 19 – three days after tying for eighth in the season-opening Safeway Open – and again Dec. 12. He has been hitting balls for a week and played a practice round Wednesday.

Mickelson is in his first year as ambassador for the tournament that begins Thursday.

RYDER CUP: Europe will have four captain’s picks on its team for the 2018 Ryder Cup as part of a revamp of the qualifying system in the wake of the heavy loss to the United States last year.

Among other changes announced by the European Tour, more points will be earned at events in the latter stages of qualifying to ensure there are more in-form players on the team.

MLS: The Los Angeles Galaxy signed veteran midfielder Jermaine Jones. The 35-year-old spent the past three seasons with Colorado and New England, making 37 appearances between the two teams while scoring five goals and adding six assists.

ENGLAND: Retired U.S. national team midfielder Heather O’Reilly signed an 18-month deal with Arsenal of England’s top women’s division.

O’Reilly, 32, won three Olympic gold medals and the 2015 World Cup in a 15-year career with the national team before her retirement from international play last September.

DAVIS CUP: Tomas Berdych won’t return to Melbourne next month to play for the Czech Republic in the first round of the Davis Cup against Australia. He wants to focus on the ATP tour.
