Maine Sen. Susan Collins made a surprisingly strong endorsement of Jeff Sessions for attorney general of the United States.

I watched most of the first day’s hearings on his nomination, and time after time, in answer to questions from Judiciary Committee members, Sessions stressed he would enforce the law, including the laws on immigration.

I have been immersed in this issue for 15 years. Part of that involvement has meant spending many hours following the issue in the U.S. Congress, and listening to floor debates and committee hearings.

Jeff Sessions has been prominent on this issue, serving as chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, and has been consistent in his positions supporting secure borders and enforcing existing laws, including those against “sanctuary cities.” The criticism of this nominee comes from those who are concerned he will do just that – what a novel idea.

Those Americans who are concerned about the security, safety and sustainability of our nation should applaud the nomination of Jeff Sessions to be attorney general.
