Portland is one of just 15 cities selected this year to host Navy Week, one of the Navy’s signature outreach programs that gives the public the opportunity to learn more about the military branch that was founded more than two centuries ago.

Portland’s Navy Week will be held Aug. 21-27 and will feature Navy divers and explosive ordnance disposal teams, sailors from the USS Constitution, musical performances by Navy Band Northeast, Navy simulators and visits to local schools.

Navy Week will coincide with Brunswick’s Great State of Maine Airshow, which is scheduled to be held Aug. 26-27 and will feature the Navy’s Blue Angels precision flying team.

According to a news release issued by the U.S. Navy’s outreach office, the Navy Week program has served as a way to introduce the public to the military branch since 2005. Navy Weeks have been held in 72 U.S. cities.

“Navy Weeks are designed to help Americans understand that their Navy protects and defends America on the world’s oceans, that their Navy is deployed around the world around the clock, and is ready to defend America at all times,” Cmdr. John Gay, director of the Navy Office of Community Outreach, said in the statement.
