Kelly helps Red Claws earn split with Greensboro

Ryan Kelly, in his second game with Maine, had 22 points and 19 rebounds Saturday night to lead the Maine Red Claws to a 111-98 D-League basketball victory and a split of their two-game series with the Greensboro Swarm before a crowd of 2,445 at the Portland Expo.

The Red Claws (19-11) lost 98-97 to Greensboro (9-20) on Friday night.

Leading scorer Abdel Nader did not suit up for Maine because of a hip injury.

Jalen Jones scored 28 points before fouling out and Marcus Georges-Hunt added 27 for the Red Claws, who return to action Thursday night at the Expo against Delaware.

Aaron Harrison led Greensboro with 22.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Defending overall champion Lara Gut got her first downhill victory of the season in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, while Lindsey Vonn crashed for the second consecutive day.

Gut finished 0.05 seconds ahead of Sofia Goggia of Italy and 0.47 in front of Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia.

The victory reduced Gut’s deficit in the overall standings behind American leader Mikaela Shiffrin to 30 points.

Vonn lost control and slammed into the safety netting in the same spot where she crashed in Friday’s training run.

MEN’S WORLD CUP: Hannes Reichelt led from the start to win a downhill race for his first victory of the season, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

The Austrian went first and completed the Kandahar course in 1 minute, 53.83 seconds, beating Italy’s Peter Fill by 0.16 seconds and Switzerland’s Beat Feuz by 0.52.

HOCKEY

NHL: Wayne Gretzky will coach the Metropolitan Division team in the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday. He is replacing John Tortorella, the Columbus Blue Jackets coach who is skipping the weekend festivities because one of his dogs is ailing.

• The NHL’s top officials are still leaning against allowing the world’s top players to participate in the Pyeongchang Olympics next year.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly acknowledged that the NHL’s board of governors doesn’t want to shut down the league to allow its players to participate in South Korea.

GOLF

PGA TOUR: Patrick Rodgers shot a 5-under 67 to share the lead with defending champion Brandt Snedeker going into the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Snedeker shot a 70. Both golfers were at 9-under 207.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Jeunghun Wang broke through a crowded leaderboard with a 7-under 65 in the third round to open a three-shot lead at the Qatar Masters in Doha, Qatar.

The 21-year-old South Korean was at 15-under 201 overall.

LPGA: Stacy Lewis had two back-nine eagles in the season-opening Pure Silk Bahamas Classic in Paradise Island, Bahamas, to again put herself in position to end a long winless streak.

Lewis shot a 10-under 63 to match Lexi Thompson atop the leaderboard at 23-under 196.
