Land trust weekend events

The Scarborough Land Trust will celebrate the statewide Great Maine Outdoors Weekend from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Preserve on Pleasant Hill Road.

SLT’s Toby Jacobs and Kathy Mills will lead a family discovery walk about the secrets of plants and animals in the winter landscape.

Historical society hikes

The Old Berwick Historical Society and Great Works Regional Land Trust present the first of five “Discover Our History” hikes at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Walk the Raymond and Simone Savage Wildlife Preserve on the South Berwick/Eliot line with OBHS president Wendy Pirsig, who will tell the story of English merchants and adventurers who settled along the Piscataqua River in the 1600s.

The history hikes will complement the 2017 OBHS lecture series about cultural frontiers. For each history hike there will be a corresponding lecture offered one to two weeks prior.

The event is free to Great Works and OBHS members, $5/$10 family suggested donation for nonmembers. Reservations are requested.

Land trust Polar Plunge set

Coastal Mountains Land Trust is hosting a Polar Plunge at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the head of Camden Harbor as part of Camden’s 2017 Winterfest Celebration. The goal is to raise $2,500

There will be a fire in the brazier, hot chocolate provided by Boynton McKay, a carpet to protect the feet of plungers and a warm beanie.

The Interact Club at Camden Hills Regional High School and the YMCA’s Sailfish Swim Team are both participating, along with others from the Camden community.

Adult education programs

Old Orchard Beach/Saco Adult and Community Education announces the following programs to begin this week at 40 E. Emerson Cummings Blvd.:

“The World of Honey: A Tasting with a Twist,” meeting 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 and 9. Beekeeper and honey expert Marc Cardullo at Elements at Biddeford will hold a two-session class that will teach all aspects of honey. Cost is $25.

 Heartsaver® CPR & First Aid for adults and children, meeting 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 and 9. This course, led by firefighter/paramedic Frank Lee, teaches the critical skills needed to respond to and manage first aid. First aid and CPR cards are good for two years. Cost is $69.

 Free HiSET orientations will be held the first three Wednesdays of each month, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Saco Learning Center, 80 Common St., Saco.

History Barn open house

The next monthly New Gloucester History Barn open house, sponsored by the New Gloucester Historical Society, will be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 383 Intervale Road, Route 231, right behind the town hall.

Fandom event on manga

Wells Public Library will host a Random Fandom event at 1 p.m. Wednesday at 1434 Post Road

For children in grades 5-8, the event will feature Otaku (manga/anime lover). There will be crafts, talking about manga and anime, snacks and games.

Kennebunk Free Library will host a parenting series with Stevie Westmoreland, LMFT, LCPC, at 10 a.m. Friday at 112 main St.

Future classes will be held on the first Friday of every month at the library. Each month a new topic will be addressed.

Awards at DAR meeting

Today is the deadline to reserve a spot for the next meeting of the Rebecca Emery Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Atria, located at 1 Penny Lane, off Route 1.

Chapter Regent Deborah Bragdon will head the meeting. The meeting will include an award ceremony honoring the winners of the American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5 through 8, and winners of the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest, for students in grades 9 through 12, both led by Leigh Olson, chapter and Maine State American History Committee chair.

Also to be honored will be the high school seniors who were elected the 2016-2017 DAR Good Citizen at schools in this area, led by DAR Good Citizen Chair Jenna Davis. There will be a tea provided by the Atria and a business meeting will follow.
