For the South Portland girls’ basketball team, there isn’t much dynamic junior guards Eva Mazur and Meghan Graff can’t do – which was abundantly clear as the duo anchored an impressive 64-40 win at Cheverus on Wednesday.

Mazur, the team’s point guard, registered six points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Graff poured in a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds from her shooting guard spot.

“They really do it all,” said South Portland Coach Lynne Hasson. “There’s a lot of good teams with good guards, but one of the things that makes us lucky is how much they do on both ends.”

After playing her first two years at McAuley, Mazur transferred to South Portland this year. She and Graff haven’t missed a beat, flashing an obvious chemistry that was developed from years of playing town and AAU ball together.

“We’ve played together since fourth grade,” said Mazur. “When I transferred back, the biggest thing was just figuring out our roles and we’ve definitely got a better understanding of them now. Our games really fit well together.”

“Eva sees the court so well,” added Graff, “so it’s been easy to get on the same page. She seems to know where I’m going to be, or where anyone who’s open is going to be, and she gets them the ball. She might not have had the most points tonight, but Eva probably had the biggest impact in us winning this game, especially with the defense she played.”

The Red Riots (13-2) sprung out to a 9-5 lead in the opening minutes behind a strong first quarter from freshman Maggie Whitmore. The 5-foot-11 center had seven points in the opening quarter. She finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Cheverus (10-5) surged back behind a trio of 3-pointers – one each from Kaylin Malmquist, Brooke McElman and Alayna Briggs – and held a 15-13 advantage after one quarter.

Graff, who had four points in the first quarter, erupted for 11 more before halftime as she sent South Portland into the break with a 28-22 lead.

“I knew she was ready to play before the game started,” said Mazur. “She was firing us up in the locker room. She got us all talking and made sure we were all ready to go. Then she started making baskets and we just fed off it.”

Abby Cavallaro finished the first half with six points, while Emme Poulin chipped in five – all in the second quarter – to pace the Stags.

After surrendering just seven points in the second quarter, the South Portland defense was even more smothering the third.

It limited the Stags to five points – one field goal and two free throws – and held them scoreless until Brooke Dawson connected on a long 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the quarter as South Portland started to pull away.

“We know Cheverus is a great shooting team,” said Graff. “We just needed to make sure we had our hands up and try to push them inside and then trust our help defense.”

Lydia Henderson chipped in with nine points and a strong defensive showing, while Kaleisha Towle added eight points for South Portland.

“This is what we’ve been working toward,” said Hasson. “That looked like a championship caliber team, and what the girls did in the third quarter was pretty incredible. I told the girls this was as good, top to bottom, all 12 girls, a South Portland game I’ve seen in a long time.”
