SCARBOROUGH — As the Scarborough girls’ basketball team pulled away from Cheverus for a 55-37 win Saturday, the Red Storm got contributions from up and down the roster.

Senior captain Brooke Malone’s hot shooting resulted in 21 points, as she knocked down four 3-pointers and went 8 of 8 at the free-throw line. Junior captain Sophie Glidden scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Lindsey Kelley, another junior, made sure Scarborough never let off the gas. The defense made adjustments at halftime and only surrendered 13 points after the break.

It all added up to one of the most complete victories this season for the Red Storm (15-1), who are trying to overtake South Portland for the No. 2 seed in Class AA South.

“Both offensively and defensively, absolutely it was,” said Scarborough Coach Mike Giordano. “You expect your two captains to lead you on both ends of the floor and they did, but our effort on defense was tremendous. We talk about winning games on the defensive end, and today was a perfect example of that.”

The Red Storm led 15-12 after one quarter, spreading the ball around as six players scored.

Emme Poulin (nine points) had a hot hand in the second quarter for the Stags (9-7), knocking down a pair of deep 3-pointers. Scarborough, meanwhile, got 3-pointers from Malone and sophomore Josie Couture, and maintained a 25-24 edge at halftime.

The Red Storm increased their lead to 33-28 after three quarters, limiting Cheverus to only two baskets.

After 3-pointers by Poulin and junior classmate Abby Cavallaro early in the fourth quarter pulled Cheverus within one, Scarborough secured the victory with a 12-0 run.

“We know they’re a 3-point shooting team, and when they start making them like that you can’t let that get you down,” said Kelley. “You have to keep pushing, getting your hands up on defense and working to score on the other end.”

Malone and Glidden fueled the fourth-quarter surge, tallying eight points apiece. They combined to go 10 of 10 from the free-throw line in the quarter, and Scarborough connected on 18 of 22 foul shots overall.

Kelley also a made a pair of hustle plays, crashing to the floor both times, but resulting in Scarborough points.

“Teams know who key players are and a lot of times try to focus in on Sophie or me on offense,” said Malone. “To have people step up the way we did today; to make hustle plays, or drive to the basket or find open players, it was huge. Everyone contributed today, and we’re really lucky to have the depth we do all the way through the bench.”
