PALMYRA — The state fire marshal’s office said Thursday it probably has identified the two victims of the early morning fire on Square Road that destroyed an apartment building earlier this week.

The victims are believed to be Kayla Brown, 28, and her 44-year-old husband, Roger Brown, according to a release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety. The couple had lived in the studio apartment above the building’s garage for 18 months. While the fire’s cause has yet to be determined, officials think it started in one of the two studio apartments over the garage.

“Work continues by the State Medical Examiner’s Office to establish positive identifications,” McCausland said in the release. He said the fire marshal’s office has told the couple’s families that the victims probably are the Browns.

The fire at 81 Square Road began around 3 a.m. Tuesday. The fire engulfed the apartment building almost instantly, and several tenants had to escape through the windows to the snow-covered yard outside.

McCausland had said some tenants in the building reported hearing smoke alarms sound, while others did not. All told, 11 people lived in the building at the time of the fire. The house was knocked down by an excavator after the fire.
