A man died in a fire that destroyed a house Saturday morning in Cape Neddick section of York.

State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators said the body – tentatively identified as that of John Herrin, 64, the owner of the home at 58 Simpson Hill Road – was discovered in the rubble of the home early Saturday afternoon, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The two-alarm fire broke out in the 1½-story home at 6:09 a.m. The state medical examiner’s office will work this coming week to make a positive identification, said McCausland.

Th fire was reported by workers at the nearby VFW Hall.

York police said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.

Firefighters from York and surrounding towns were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the woods and nearby homes, police said.
