A 54-year-old Buxton woman was killed Friday when her snowmobile was hit by a sport utility vehicle as she tried to cross a road in the York County town.
The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. in the area of 297 Rankin Road. Buxton Police Chief Troy Cline said the woman, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene. Police had not released her name as of late Friday pending notification of her family.
The driver of the SUV was not identified by police. He was not injured and charges were not expected to be filed against him.
Cline said it’s possible that the sun was in the woman’s eyes and she did not see the SUV in the road.
The Maine Warden Service and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are assisting Buxton police with a reconstruction of the accident.
Rankin Road was closed Friday afternoon as police investigated the crash.
