An Etna man was killed early Saturday in a snowmobile crash in Newport.

The Maine Warden Service said Jack McKay III, 36, died shortly after midnight Friday while snowmobiling with two friends on Interconnecting Trail System 85 in Newport.

It was the sixth snowmobile-related fatality in Maine this season.

McKay’s snowmobile hit a tree while he was trying to negotiate a turn in the trail, the warden service said.

He was discovered by two others in his group shortly after the crash.

The two other riders were Benjamin Roundy, 36, of Newport and Cain MacKenzie, 36, of Plymouth.

Speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash, which is under investigation, the warden service said.

MacKenzie was issued a summons for operating a snowmobile under the influence, the warden service said. No charges have been filed against Roundy.

The Newport Police Department and Newport Fire Department are helping in the investigation.
