Southern Maine Community College beat top-seeded New Hampshire Technical Institute 85-74 in the title game of the Yankee Small College Conference basketball tournament at South Portland on Sunday. With the win, SMCC advances to the USCAA national tournament in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

Timothy Dixon and Chase Soares each had 18 points for the second-seeded Seawolves (23-6), who won their first title since 2008.

Ryan Cloutier added 14 points for the Seawolves, while John Morgan added 13 points and nine rebounds.

BASEBALL

WINTHROP 3, MAINE 0: Winthrop scored a pair of runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Grant English as it took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2 win, sweeping a three-game series over the Black Bears (0-3) at Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Maine jumped out to an first-inning lead on an RBI double by Christopher Bec.

Danny Casals led the offense for the Black Bears, going 3 for 4 with a run scored. Cody Lawyerson took the loss for Maine in 1/3 of an inning of relief, surrendering a pair of runs on a hit and a walk.

CHAPMAN 5, BATES 4: Gavin Blodgett singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as the Panthers (5-2) edged the Bobcats (0-1) at Orange, California. John Dinucci led the offense for Bates, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI while Brandan Fox added a two-run single.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 5, MAINE 0: Rebecca Leslie paced the offense with a pair of goals and an assist as the Terriers (17-10-6, 12-8-4 Hockey East) easily got past the Black Bears (10-21-1, 6-17-1) in the final game of the regular season at Boston.
