A Harrison man has been charged with two counts of arson, a Class A felony, in connection with a fire that damaged a barn in the Cumberland County town last Friday evening.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, identified the suspect as Dathan Wakefield, 44, who has been engaged in a long-runnng dispute with the barn’s owner.

Wakefield’s arrest on Monday by the state Fire Marshal’s Office follows a fire that damaged the barn at 1073 Edes Falls Road. Investigators said the fire started on the outside of the barn, which was attached to a home owned by Michael Giguere.

A neighbor spotted the fire and was able to warn Giguere, who escaped without being harmed. Police said Wakefield and Giguere know each other.
