The effort by President Trump and his supporters, like Gov. LePage, to limit immigration from certain countries is under the guise of keeping Americans safe. If this effort is to succeed, then it seems to me that there are other, better ways to keep us safe other than singling out Muslims.

More than 33,000 Americans are killed by guns every year – murder, suicide, accidents, self-defense, etc. Making it difficult for many people to get guns would make life safer. More than 40,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in the U.S. in 2016. What do we need to do to make a significant reduction in highway deaths? And even worse is the number of deaths from drug overdoses – more than 47,000 in 2014.

I would like to see the president use his tweets and his bully pulpit to help solve some of these difficult issues.
