Tracking dogs managed to find a 9-year-old boy lost for more than nine hours Friday in frigid conditions in the woods near the Penobscot and Aroostook county line.
Rowen Ross of Sherman went missing from Katahdin Middle School in Stacyville at noon Friday, touching off a search by game wardens, Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and search dogs. Hundreds of volunteers joined the search on foot and with snowmobiles, Maine Army National Guard and Border Patrol helicopters and other vehicles.
A search team that included a game warden, a Baxter State Park ranger and a Maine State Police search dog found the boy about 9:45 p.m. under a tree near the Penobscot and Aroostook county line.
“Ross knew he was lost and walked until it got dark, at which time he sat down on a property line between Penobscot and Aroostook counties and waited to be rescued,” said Lt. Dan Scott of the Maine Warden Service.
Scott said the boy was wet and cold and spent some time yelling for help and was glad when he heard the game warden yelling for him.
The boy was taken to safety on a snowmobile.
