AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Bowdoin used strong pitching and timely hitting Thursday to sweep Gordon 4-1 and 5-2 in a nonconference baseball doubleheader.

In the opener, the Polar Bears (3-3) scored in each of the first two innings, then made it 4-0 in the third on a two-run single to right-center by Colby Joncas. Gordon (3-5) spoiled the shutout when Addison Tarr scored on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

In the second game, Gordon led 1-0 before the Polar Bears went ahead for good in the second on Sean Mullaney’s run-scoring grounder. Nick Sadler scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Bowdoin added two runs in the fifth and each team scored in the seventh.

MEN’S LACROSSE

WIDENER 12, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 10: Tyler Shulte scored five goals to lead the Pride (2-3) over the Nor’easters (4-1) at Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.

Widener had five goals in each of the first two quarters for a 10-5 halftime lead. UNE rallied late, scoring twice in the final minute.

Anthony Paone won 15 of 25 faceoffs for the Pride. Alex Zadworny led the Nor’easters with three goals.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

HAMILTON 12, BOWDOIN 7: Hannah Hirschfeld scored two goals for the Polar Bears (3-1) in a loss to the Continentals (1-3) at Englewood, Florida.

Bowdoin led 5-2 midway through the first half, but Hamilton took the lead 7-5 by halftime and steadily pulled away behind five second-half goals by Jackie Cuddy.

SOFTBALL

BOWDOIN 10, ENDICOTT 2: The Polar Bears (1-2) picked up their first win of the season in a six-inning victory against the Gulls (4-3) at Leesburg, Florida.

Emily Griffin of Bowdoin allowed four hits and two runs. Natalie Edwards, Caroline Rice, Claire McCarthy and Samantha Valdivia each drove in a pair of runs.

Jamie Hopgood and Julia McNeill drove in runs for Endicott in the sixth.

ARCADIA 8, BOWDOIN 4: Mary Pat Murray hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Knights (6-2) went on to defeat the Polar Bears (1-3) at Leesburg, Florida.

Arcadia added four runs in the second.

Samantha Roy of Bowdoin gave up seven runs on three hits in the first two innings. Allison Rutz pitched the final five innings for the Polar Bears and allowed one hit and one run, walking one and striking out six.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 5, WASHINGTON (MO.) 4: Amy Walsh had two hits and three runs to lead the Nor’easters (4-3) over the Bears (6-4) at Clermont, Florida.

Katelyn Austin picked up the win, allowing eight hits and a pair of walks, striking out four.

Taylor Arends singled in the go-ahead run for UNE in the fifth after a leadoff triple by Walsh. Arends finished 3 for 4 as the Nor’easters won their third straight.

SUNY-GENESEO 6, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Alexis Kidder had five strikeouts, and allowed four hits and a walk as the Knights (7-3) beat the Nor’easters (4-4) at Clermont, Florida.

Geneseo totaled five runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kylie Papagelos and Alyssa Persich drove in runs, and Abby Dennett added an RBI and a run.

Avery Alberghini singled and scored for UNE, and Sydney Helmbrecht added two hits.
