A man was injured and four animals killed in a house fire Saturday in Old Orchard Beach, the fire chief said Sunday.

The fire at 19 Harmon Ave., started in the basement about 5 p.m.

The only occupant in the house at the time, a 21-year-old man whose identity was not released, got second-degree burns on one of his hands trying to put out the fire, Fire Chief Edward Dube said. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had engulfed the ground floor of the single-story home, he said. It was a complete loss. The man’s parents, who own the home, were out of town at the time.

Dube said one dog and three cats were killed, and a fourth cat is missing.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, he said.
