The Portland Press Herald recently reported that the Maine Legislature’s Transportation Committee is considering an annual surcharge on hybrid and all-electric cars to help raise the funding needed to properly care for our roads.

As the owner of a hybrid, I say, “Do it!”

I bought the hybrid because it was less costly to run and helped the environment – but that, in no way, resulted in my driving less. As a result, I am using the roads as much, if not more, than I did prior to the hybrid and am not contributing as much to maintenance of the roads as I did before.

Asking hybrid and all-electric vehicle owners to pay a surcharge each year is simply asking us to pay a fair share toward the maintenance of the roads.
