Although notice of Marsden Hartley’s otherwise largely unacknowledged genius is appreciated in the Maine Sunday Telegram (April 16), I strongly believe your photo spread of his works on Page E1 seriously misrepresents that genius.

Where are his lush, burly landscapes in the style of (if not surpassing) Cezanne and Wyeth? Sadly, the Telegram is not alone in so erring; Portland’s own museum of art, which (to my knowledge) has only recently included Hartley in its curatorial scheme, also fails to display his great works – stooping only to studies and ephemera. Apparently, canonization comes only at the cost of disgrace.
