If you support funding programs that will increase property taxes in the city of Portland, that’s great. If you support instituting rent control, that’s fine, too. However, I’m getting tired of the same voices speaking out in favor of both things.
It is impossible to continue to force rental property owners to pay more in taxes in order to fund city programs while also demanding that they freeze or lower their rents. If the city spent more time trying to lower taxes and fees by efficiently spending money, rental property owners could afford to lower rents.
No one invests in real estate to lose money, so if taxes and fees continue to increase, expect rents to rise as well.
