The toddler killed Friday afternoon when he was run over by a pickup truck in the parking lot of Alton Elementary School was identified Saturday by Maine State Police as Drake Sechrest, 18 months old, of Howland.

The boy was in the parking lot with his mother, 25-year-old Caitlin Carroll, and eight others watching family members use a go-kart, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

He said Drake had wandered away from the family when he was hit about 4:30 p.m. Friday by a pickup driven by George Madore, 49, of Old Town, a janitor at the school who knows the boy’s family and had talked to some of the adults before driving off.

Madore, who did not see Drake, had driven less than 10 feet when one of his truck’s tires ran over the child, according to McCausland. Emergency workers arrived at the scene to treat the boy, but he died 20 minutes later, according to McCausland.

He said state police continue to investigate the accident.
