L.L. Bean received United Way’s inaugural United We Thrive Community Give Award, recognizing the Freeport retailer’s donation of $1.7 million in the 2016 campaign. Corporate donations totaled over $600,000, while L.L. Bean employee contributions added another $1.1 million, according to a release from the company. The company was the largest donor to United Way in Maine and presented with the award April 28.

For four decades, L.L.Bean has partnered with United Way on a number of initiatives, including donations, volunteerism, the loaned executive program, and often exceeded the $1 million threshold in donations. Shawn Gorman, L.L. Bean’s executive chairman and United Way campaign cabinet member, said he was proud of the employees who generously contributed to the campaign, and was humbled by the United Way’s recognition.
