KENNEBUNKPORT — Hundreds of people, many bundled in rain gear and blankets, waved flags and paid tribute to American soldiers killed in action at the town’s annual Memorial Day Parade.
There to greet them was former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, who sat in a cordoned off area in Dock Square, waving to paradegoers and marchers as they passed by.
The Bushes were joined by retired Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, who served as national security adviser to Bush and President Gerald Ford.
As the mist turned into light rain, members of the Kennebunkport American Legion Memorial Post 159 lady’s auxiliary unit laid a wreath on the town bridge, and a 21-gun salute rang out.
In brief remarks to the crowd, guest speaker retired Air Force Col. Jennifer M. Fullmer implored the audience to remember those who gave their lives so that Americans remain free.
“We owe an enormous debt of gratitude, honor and respect for America’s fallen heroes,” Fullmer said, marveling at the myriad threats that have faced the United States throughout the decades.
“One thing that hasn’t changed is the price for deserving freedom,” she said.
