A man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, stole her car and then crashed twice at high speed in York on Saturday managed to elude police.

York police said the man assaulted and threatened his girlfriend about 8:15 p.m. at the Microtel and then took her car. Police received a number of emergency calls reporting that the car had struck another car and then a guardrail on Spur Road before exiting onto Interstate 95 south.

More callers reported the vehicle was traveling at a high speed and collided with another vehicle just south of the York River bridge, which caused the speeding car to crash into a gully next to the highway. The man fled from there.

Maine State Police, York police, the York Fire Department, York ambulance and Kittery police responded. York police said they are preparing arrest warrants for the man, whose identity is being withheld until he is arrested.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the Interstate 95 crash was treated at York Hospital for minor injuries.
