A Sanford man who drove onto a Limerick sidewalk, striking and killing a jogger in July 2016 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, with all but seven years suspended.

William George, 42, will also serve four years of probation on the manslaughter charge.

George had taken fentanyl and was driving on a suspended license in the July 4, 2016 crash that killed John Mullin, 47, a Massachusetts man vacationing in Maine with his family. After the crash, George drove from the scene in a car with two flat tires and a smashed windshield to his house, but later walked back to the site of the crash to tell a sheriff’s deputy, “It was me. I was the one that hit that man.”

George was also sentenced to a concurrent seven-year term for operating under the influence of drugs and causing a death and for operating after suspension and causing a death. He received a suspended three-and-a-half year sentence for aggravated leaving the scene of an accident causing a death.

George, who has three prior convictions for operating under suspension and a 2006 conviction for trafficking in drugs, also had his driver’s license suspended for the maximum of 10 years.
