ROCHESTER, N.H. — Garon Kelley and Nate Rogers each had two hits and drove in two runs Wednesday, leading Portland to an 8-1 victory against Rochester, New Hampshire, in the quarterfinals of the Babe Ruth regional tournament for 13- to 15-year-olds.

Portland will take on North Providence-Smithfield, Rhode Island, in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Friday. Portland lost to North Providence-Smithfield 6-5 in the opening game of pool play.

The winner will play later that day for the regional title and a trip to the World Series in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

Brian Riley pitched four innings for Portland, allowing one run with four strikeouts.

AMERICAN LEGION

BESSEY MOTORS 4, COASTAL LANDSCAPE 3: Blake Slicer pitched eight innings and Bessey Motors scored four runs in the ninth to beat Coastal Landscape (12-8) in the state tournament at Bangor.

Slicer allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out five. Cameron Slicer had three hits and Troy Johnson drove in two runs for Bessey Motors.

James Sinclair of Coastal Landscape allowed three runs on six hits, striking out eight over eight innings.

BANGOR 4, FAYETTE STAPLES 0: Jesse Colford stuck out 15 over 62/3 innings, allowing two hits, and Bangor scored four runs in the fifth to beat Fayette Staples (11-8) in the state tournament at Bangor.

Noah Missbrenner hit a two-run single in the fifth and Ethan Stoddard added an RBI double for Bangor. Zack Hamm struck out eight, allowing three earned runs over 42/3 innings for Fayette Staples.

YANKEE FORD 7, PASTIME 6: Ben Conti had three hits and three RBI as Yankee Ford (15-6) advanced in the state tournament at Bangor.

Nate Ingalls added two hits, and Riley Hasson hit an RBI double for Yankee Ford, which scored four runs in the first inning. Brock Belanger had three hits and scored twice for Pastime, and Hunter Landry had two hits and two RBI.

WELLS 5, BREWER 3: Liam Bell drove in two runs and scored twice, and Wells (9-3) scored four runs in the eighth inning at the state tournament at Bangor.

Justin Wiggins pitched eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five to earn the win. Logan Rogerson had four hits for Brewer, including a double and a triple.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE

PATRIOT INSURANCE 2, EDGE ACADEMY 0: Grayson Beressi and Pete Stauber each had two hits and Patriot Insurance (12-7) scored its runs in the first inning to beat Edge Academy (9-9) at South Portland.

Dustin McCrossin’s groundout drove in Beressi, who led off with a single, to give Patriot a 1-0 lead. Nick Lorello made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

ON TARGET 5, AERO HEATING & VENTILATING 2: Ben Rollins hit an RBI single during a three-run third inning as On Target (6-13) beat Aero Heating & Ventilating (9-10) at Cumberland.

Grant Heffler had three hits and scored a run, and Phil Levangie earned the win for On Target, allowing a run on four hits, striking out three in six innings.

Connor McDowell had two hits for Aero Heating.

NECBL

SANFORD 6, WINNIPESAUKEE 5: Harrison Ray scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning to lift the Mainers (9-16) past the Muskrats (17-22) at Sanford.

Ray led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. He advanced to third on a walk, then scored on Bryan Sturge’s fielder’s choice.

EMPIRE LEAGUE

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 9, PUERTO RICO 5: Edgar Lebron Jr. hit a two-run homer in a five-run third inning as the Surge (17-15) downed the Islanders (12-20) at Old Orchard Beach.
