On Thursday, House Republicans approved a $1.6 billion down payment on a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border. The funding is attached to a spending bill for several departments.

We know that Mexico will never reimburse us for this wall and that U.S. taxpayers will be stuck with paying for it for many years to come, long after President Trump is out of office.

I asked Maine’s elected representatives in Washington not to approve funding for this wall. It should be an issue on its own rather than hidden in the budget for multiple departments. I wish this administration would just be up-front about things instead of trying to sneak them through, without a lot of people knowing about it until it is too late for us to give our opinions.
