Rob Gomez, the runner who sacrificed a race victory to aid an ailing competitor at Saturday’s TD Beach to Beacon 10K, will be honored by race organizers Thursday.

Gomez, 34, of Windham, will be presented with an honorary Thos. Moser Beacon Box by race founder Joan Benoit Samuelson in a ceremony in Freeport. The Beacon Box has been presented to race winners at the Beach to Beacon since 2014.

Competing for the top spot in the Maine men’s race, Gomez picked up fallen leader Jesse Orach and then assisted Orach the final 50 meters of the race, making sure Orach finished first. In doing so, Gomez passed up the opportunity to win the Maine Men’s race and the $1,000 top prize.
