WHITING — The Maine Warden Service says a Machias man drowned when his kayak overturned on a lake in rural eastern Maine.

The warden service said 48-year-old Allen Devericks was kayaking with his 22-year-old daughter Brandi on Indian Lake in Whiting on Wednesday evening when his kayak overturned. His daughter’s kayak also capsized when she attempted to help.

A canoeist heard cries for help and tried to rescue the pair, but the canoe overturned as well, the warden service said. The rescuer was able to get another boat and towed Devericks’ daughter to shore, but her father was unable to stay afloat and slipped beneath the surface.

The warden service said the pair had life jackets but were not wearing them. The incident remains under investigation.
