Two people were injured when their speeding car went off Blackstrap Road in Falmouth on Friday night, police said.

A Falmouth police cruiser was on the side of the road near the intersection with Hardy Road around 8 p.m. when a car sped past, Sgt. George Savidge of the Falmouth Police Department said.

He said the car was going more than 80 miles an hour.

Savidge said the officer in the cruiser had barely started to give chase when the car went off the road, plowing through trees and brush. He said the car traveled an estimated 200 feet off the road before it stopped.

A crew from the Falmouth Fire Department had to cut the couple, a man and woman in their 20s, out of the car. They were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, Savidge said.

As of late Friday night, he said, police were still trying to confirm their identities and don’t know why the car was traveling so fast.
