Westbrook police and Maine State Police were investigating the shooting death of a woman Monday night.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, was unable to identify the victim or give her age. He said the shooting happened in a home at 40 Falmouth St. in Westbrook but was not sure if it is an apartment or a single-family residence.

A team of state police detectives and evidence technicians was expected to spend most of the night interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

Though McCausland and Police Chief Janine Roberts described the woman’s death as suspicious, McCausland said that doesn’t necessarily mean the death was a homicide.

“We are going to be doing a number of interviews,” McCausland said. “Right now we have a number of questions that need to be answered and we expect to do that through the evidence and interviews.”

No other details are expected to be released until Tuesday.
