AUGUSTA — A 71-year-old woman was pulled from the bottom of a hotel swimming pool Monday evening and taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center.

Augusta Police Sgt. Vicente Morris said the woman, whom he declined to identify, was seen swimming in the pool at the Quality Inn & Suites on Whitten Road. Bystanders, who saw her next at the bottom of the pool, pulled her out and administered CPR.

Police and Augusta Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at about 7 p.m. Fire Battalion Chief John Bennett said his staff performed resuscitation measures and took the woman to the hospital at about 7:30 p.m.

According to the hotel’s website, no lifeguard is on duty at the pool and people use the pool at their own risk.

Morris said he believes the woman is not from Augusta. Her condition was not known on Monday evening.
