ALLAGASH – Thousands of people were without power in northern Maine on Tuesday after a problem with a transmission line sending electricity to the area.

Emera Maine said more than 11,400 outages had been reported in Aroostook County on Tuesday. The company’s outage map showed only 18 customers without electricity by early afternoon.

The utility said the transmission line that sends electricity to thousands of people in the county had tripped, resulting in an interruption of service.

About 70,000 people live in Aroostook County, which is the northernmost county in the eastern United States.

Emera said it worked with crews from New Brunswick Power to identify the cause of the interruption and make repairs. The outage had cut service to customers from Allagash to Caribou and Madawaska to New Sweden.
