An 83-year-old woman died and her son was injured trying to rescue her during a fire early Tuesday morning at a home on Hanscom Road in Eliot.

Investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office say the fire, which was reported just after 11 p.m. Monday, started in a garage and spread to Beverly Webber’s apartment on the second floor. Her son and grandson, who lived in the attached house, both escaped the fire, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Ralph Webber III, 57, attempted to rescue his mother, but broke his hip when he was forced to jump to the ground from her bedroom window. Beverly Webber’s body was found in her bedroom.

Beverly Webber owned the property.

McCausland said the heavy damage to the house is making the investigation into the cause of the fire difficult.

There were no fire hydrants near the house at 230 Hanscom Road. Crews from eight communities helped fight the fire and bring in water by tanker truck.
