Contrary to critics who say that President Trump’s tax reform plan is simply tax cuts for “the rich,” the fact of the matter is, if Congress passes his plan, the size of paychecks for lower- and middle-income American workers will increase in a big way.

The plan would double the amount of money individuals and married couples pay no taxes on at all – from $6,000 to $12,000 for individuals and from $12,000 to $24,000 for married couples. It also increases the tax benefits we get for having children, and it would help Maine small businesses compete with international big businesses – meaning more good jobs for Mainers.

Once upon a time, Democrats as well as Republicans understood the good that can come from reducing tax burdens. In the early 1960s, Democratic President John F. Kennedy stated, “The purpose of cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus.”

JFK was right then, and Trump is right now. Working Americans and our small businesses need a boost. We still have not fully recovered from the Great Recession. Washington politicians need to put their differences aside and pass this plan.
