This year has been weird. I often wake up worried about the people who once thought they were safe, how health care is getting harder to acquire, LGBTQ rights are being stripped away and our friends born in other countries are being made to feel unwelcome.

It often feels like there is nothing we can do. However, we do have the ability to make change. If we want real change, we have to start at the local level. Voting this year is so important, and we live in a state where voting is relatively easy.

This year we have the chance to grant health care access to 70,000 Mainers who would otherwise be unable to get medical treatment, and we can elect a true progressive to City Council. I urge folks to vote “yes” on Question 2 on the statewide ballot (MaineCare expansion) and vote for Joey Brunelle for the at-large seat on the Portland City Council.
