The Boston Red Sox added former manager Tony La Russa to their front office Thursday as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

La Russa is expected assist Dombrowski in all areas of baseball operations, including player development and consultation with the major and minor league coaching staffs.

La Russa, 73, left his role as chief baseball analyst and advisor for the Arizona Diamondbacks in October.

La Russa managed the White Sox, Athletics and Cardinals in 33-year career and ranks third on major league baseball’s win list. He managed three World Series champions and was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2014.
