GORHAM — Reserve Julia Middlebrook put in a layup with 4:18 to play in the third quarter Tuesday, igniting an 11-1 run that helped Bates College to a 68-56 victory against the University of Southern Maine in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Warren Gymnasium.

Nina Davenport led the Bobcats (1-2) with 27 points and eight boards, Melanie Binkhorst added 12 points and Middlebrooks finished with nine.

Kristen Curley led USM (0-4)with 20 points, Emily Nicholson chipped in with 15.

ST. JOSEPH’S 84, UM-FARMINGTON 57: Regan McFerran had 20 points to lead four players in double-figures for the Monks (2-1), who opened a 38-22 halftime lead and defeated the Beavers (0-3) at Farmington.

Kelsi McNamara had 18 points for St. Joseph’s.

UM-AUGUSTA 62, SMCC 60: Caitlin LaFountain’s layup gave the Moose (6-4, 4-1 Yankee Small College) the lead with 29 seconds to play against the Seawolves (5-3, 3-1) at Augusta.

After a timeout, Emily Hogan missed a 3-pointer for SMCC and following an offensive rebound, Dominique Lewis had a steal for Augusta. She hit her first free throw to ice it.

COLBY 68, THOMAS 41: The Mules (2-1) closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run to open a 20-9 lead and handled the visiting Terriers (1-3) at Waterville.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BOWDOIN 120, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGAND 93: Reserve Sam Grad went 10 of 11 from the field and had a game-high 24 points to lead six players in double figures for the Polar Bears (3-0) against the Nor’easters (1-3) at Brunswick.

UM-FARMINGTON 71, ST. JOSEPH’S 69: Bill Ruby hit a 3-pointer with 3:34 to play in overtime to give the Beavers (1-2) a 66-65 lead against the Monks (1-2) at Farmington.

BATES 55, SOUTHERN MAINE 46: Tom Coyne had a game-high 16 points as the Bobcats (2-1) downed the Huskies (1-3) at Gorham.

COLBY 81, THOMAS 66: The Mules (3-0) opened the game with an 11-3 run and ran out to a 43-29 halftime lead, handling the visiting Terriers (1-2) at Waterville.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 108, UM-AUGUSTA 86: Dylan Sylvester had 25 points and 18 rebounds to lead six players, including all five starters, in double figures as the Seawolves (6-2, 2-1 Yankee Small College) cruised past the Moose (2-4, 1-3) at Augusta.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1, SALEM STATE 1: Jessica Tolzman scored a power-play goal from Kyra Yu and Alex Mitchell with 52 seconds left in the first period to tie the game for the Nor’easters (1-2-4) against the Vikings (0-5-2) at Salem, Massachusetts.

COLBY 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Natalie Mause scored from Tay Munson after 11:03 and the Mules (1-1-1) shut out the Huskies (2-6) at Waterville.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, BOWDOIN 2: Brady Fleurent scored the go-ahead goal from Ray Bloom and Tyler Seltenreich with 6:13 to play as the Nor’easters (3-3-1) got past the host Polar Bears (1-2) at Brunswick.

SALEM STATE 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Mackenzie Cook scored twice for the Vikings (3-4), who opened a 2-0 first-period lead and held off the Huskies (1-5-1) at Gorham.
