Fire broke out at Augusta’s Hatch Hill landfill for the second night in a row, drawing firefighters from surrounding communities to help knock it down.

Lt. Brian Chamberlin of the Augusta Fire Department, said the call came in around 3:30 a.m., after reports of an odor of smoke in the area.

“We had been out on another call and smelled the odor of smoke,” Chamberlin said.

Chamberlin said when the fire was located at the landfill – both smoke and flames were visible – he requested responses from surrounding towns to set up a relay to bring water to the landfill from the closest hydrant, which is 2 miles away. Units from Windsor, Whitefield, Chelsea, Vassalboro, West Gardiner and Pittston were among those responding.

The fire was about 100 yards away from the location of the fire that burned early Saturday morning.

Chamberlin said it’s not clear what started this fire, but rangers from the Maine Forest Service were on the scene.

“I’m not sure what got hauled in this week,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll be able to pinpoint anything.”

Chamberlin said the fire was out shortly after 7 a.m., and Augusta Public Works employees were bringing in material to cover that section of the landfill.

A midafternoon check showed no hot spots.

Early Saturday, firefighters from Augusta and surrounding towns spent about six hours knocking down a fire at the landfill that had been reported by a member of the LifeFlight helicopter crew that had seen the flames from the air.
