Fire destroys Gorham home, barn

Thousands of residents in Gorham, Standish and Windham lost power Thursday night because of a fire that destroyed a home and attached barn in the Little Falls section of Gorham.

At least four people were in the home at 682 Gray Road when the fire broke out in the barn around 8 p.m. All of them escaped uninjured, but several pets were killed.

This time, savoring the ride

As a freshman, Caitlin Hynes was happy to be part of the Bowdoin College women's basketball team that made it to the Elite Eight. But she really didn't comprehend the experience.

"I remember thinking it was awesome but not understanding what it was," said Hynes. "I mean, we had a good team. We were supposed to be there."

Our View: 'Lowest-achieving' list not necessarily bad news

It would be easy to misread this week's announcement of the state's 10 "persistently low-achieving schools."

This is not a list of the worst schools in the state, or even a list of failing schools. Not every school was included in the evaluation process, including some schools with serious problems.

Irish fun for all

With St. Patrick's Day right around the corner, it's good to remember that drinking Guinness, painting shamrocks on your face and wearing funny hats aren't the only ways to celebrate.

You could just as easily listen to Irish music, watch a parade, hunt for ghosts, jump in the ocean, run a 5K or leg wrestle with roller derby stars. And if those events don't give you a proper sense of Irish pride, head to your local watering hole and drink your fill of green beer. We won't judge.
