BANGOR — A state senator from Cape Elizabeth is forming a statewide organization that will work for creation of a national park in northern Maine.

The Bangor Daily News says Democratic Sen. Cynthia Dill’s Friends of the Maine Woods will lead the effort to help environmentalist and businesswoman Roxanne Quimby donate 70,000 acres for a creation of a national park in 2016. The park would border Baxter State Park.

Dill says the group has more than 1,800 members and has gathered more than 2,500 petition signatures in favor of the park.

The idea is generating opposition elsewhere.

Millinocket town council has passed a resolution opposing the park and East Millinocket voters have gone on record against a feasibility study. The state Legislature has also passed a resolution opposing the park idea.
