UN Ambassador Susan Rice, right, smiles as she is applauded, as President Barack Obama says what an excellent job she has been doing, before meeting with his cabinet, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington. Earlier, Rice continued her fight on Capitol Hill to win over skeptics in the Senate who could block her chances at becoming the next U.S. secretary of state. Republican lawmakers said they were even more troubled after face-to-face meetings with her over the handling of the Sept. 11 deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Surrounded Wednesday by his Cabinet members — including Rice — Obama said he could not be prouder of the job she has done on behalf of the United States at the United Nations. His comments came in response to a reporter's question about whether Rice was getting fair treatment on Capitol Hill.

Cabinet members joined Obama in applause.

Some Senate Republicans have said they would hold up Rice's confirmation if Obama nominates her to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
