Falmouth man killed in Naples crash

NAPLES — A Falmouth man is dead and a Massachusetts man is in critical condition following a single-car crash on Thompson Point Road in Naples.

William B. Schneider, 22, was a passenger in a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Richard D. Griffin, 51, of Peabody, Mass., when the Blazer went off the road and crashed into a large pine tree, killing Schneider, police said.

Griffin was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said.

A woman walking her dog discovered the Blazer at 4:20 a.m., but police say the crash may have happened earlier in the day.

The crash is being investigated by members of the Cumberland County Sheriff's detective unit and an accident reconstructionist from Windham police. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
