Hannaford parent lets go 6 execs in restructuring

Six executives in Scarborough have lost their jobs as part of a restructuring plan by Hannaford’s parent company Delhaize America.

Delhaize America announced Jan. 11 it would cut its executive ranks by 25 percent nationally as part of “efforts to reduce general and administrative costs and better serve customers," the company said. The six positions in Scarborough are among 15 eliminated nationwide last month.

Hannaford spokesman Michael Norton confirmed Monday that six of the 15 executives were based in Scarborough, but said he would not disclose their names. He said all six had responsibilities across the United States.

“It’s all about keeping our cost structure as efficient as possible. We think that’s good for our customers,” Norton said.

An internal memo from Delhaize America President Roland Smith obtained and published by trade publication “Frozen & Refrigerated Buyer” outlines the job cuts, as well as promotions and new hires.

“Our new structure includes 50 officers, which represents almost a 25 percent reduction, and is a balance of position creation, position elimination, and some positions remaining the same,” Smith wrote.

Smith said the new officer structure “required a great number of difficult decisions that led to the departure of many longtime, well-respected leaders.”

The “departures” list from the memo includes four executives who match up with profiles posted on LinkedIn, a professional networking website, by longtime Scarborough employees of Hannaford and Delhaize America.

— Steve Culver was most recently the vice president of government relations and had been with Hannaford since 1990, according to LinkedIn.

— Kristen Hanson most recently was vice president of Our Brands. She began her career with Hannaford in 2000 as a district manager in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, according to her LinkedIn profile.

— Lisa Miller, vice president of sustainability, held various positions with Hannaford and Delhaize since 2003, according to her LinkedIn profile.

— Lisa Toner, vice president of legal affairs, began working for Hannaford in 1996, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The other two Scarborough executives affected could not immediately be identified.

The executive cutbacks came more than a month after Delhaize America announced a management shakeup that also affected Scarborough. Brad Wise was named president of Scarborough-based Hannaford Supermarkets. He replaced Beth Newlands Campbell, who became president of North Carolina-based Food Lion and Harveys.

Delhaize America has more than 1,500 stores along the East Coast, including 181 Hannaford Supermarkets. Other chains owned by Delhaize America include Bottom Dollar Food, Food Lion, Harveys, Reid’s and Sweetbay.
