Pirates finalize their 22-player roster for the playoffs

— PORTLAND — A number of injured players and one new face were included on the Portland Pirates' Clear Day roster released Thursday by the American Hockey League.

The roster is a list of 22 players eligible for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

Geoff Waugh, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound defenseman who has played the last two AHL seasons for the Binghamton Senators, was included.

Portland Coach Kevin Dineen said Waugh, who is recovering from an injury, is on loan from Binghamton. In return, the Pirates loaned forward Aaron Slattengren to the Senators, Dineen said.

''(Waugh) will give us some much-needed depth on defense,'' Dineen said.

Rookie defenseman Chris Butler, who has played in the NHL with the parent Buffalo Sabres for the past four months, was included on the roster.

Injured goalie Adam Dennis (hip) and injured defensemen Mike Weber (shoulder), Mike Funk (concussion) and Mike Card (concussion) also were listed.

AHL teams are allowed to replace players who are injured, suspended or on call-ups to the NHL.

''What it does, it allows us to use a lot of our players in our system,'' Dineen said.

''While (those players) are out, I have the option of using other players to replace them in the lineup.''
