The American Hockey League, meanwhile, announced Portland center Cody McCormick has been suspended five games for leaving the players' bench to start an altercation during the third period of a 7-2 loss at Providence on Sunday afternoon.
Wanvig, who spent last season playing in Europe, had a goal and three assists for Portland in three exhibitions.
The 28-year-old Wanvig has played in 350 AHL games and 75 in the NHL.
Wanvig practiced with the Pirates on Wednesday morning.
He will travel with the Pirates this weekend to games in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Last weekend, McCormick returned to the Portland lineup after missing two games because of injury.
