Maine forward Joey Diamond and forward/defenseman Matt Mangene are Long Islanders, and didn't have to go far for some summer hockey.
Diamond and Mangene are taking part in the New York Islanders' mini-camp this week at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., and are two of a handful of Black Bears taking part in summer prospect camps held by NHL teams.
Mike Banwell and Brian Flynn are participating in Philadelphia's prospect camp in Voorhees, N.J., while Will O'Neill is participating in Atlanta's prospect camp in Duluth, Ga.
Last month, Tanner House took part in Montreal's prospect camp in Brossard, Quebec, and former Maine goalie Scott Darling will take part in Phoenix's prospect camp, which begins Friday in Peoria, Ariz.
Of note - both the Flyers and Islanders have University of Maine connections. Chris Pryor, the Flyers' director of hockey operations, is the father of Maine defenseman Nick Pryor, and Islanders General Manager Garth Snow, as you probably know, is a former Black Bear goalie.

Speaking of Snow ...
Yahoo's Puck Daddy had a piece today on the NHL free agency frenzy from the perspective of four unnamed agents. (Disclaimer: using unnamed sources is something traditionally frowned upon here at Press Herald Plaza, so we'll leave that up to the other outlets.) In the story, Snow gets some solid reviews:
We asked the agents: Which general manager gets a bum rap from fans and the media but is actually quite good at what he does?
Two answered immediately and emphatically: New York Islanders GM Garth Snow.
"The most underrated GM in the business," said one agent. "He knows every nuance of the CBA. He has confidence in his five-year plan and is methodically implementing it."
Another agent said that Snow is a straight-shooter with a "player's mentality" rather than a Harvard education; and that as the GM for a team struggling to attract significant free agents, Snow is a hustler. "He gets a player's ear by being aggressive," said the agent.
