How often do you get to see a really cool music show for just $1.02? Probably not too often but you can on Thursday when Ernie and the Automatics play at Asylum. Dig all the change out of your car ash tray and pay for one of your friends to come along, too. It's a 21-plus show that starts at 8 p.m.
If you want to get your music fix a little earlier tonight, head over to Grace Restaurant for the 6-8 p.m. show from Adam Waxmen.
And finally, let's hope this doesn't accurately describe you but is just a fun name for a gig: I'm too Broke to be This Drunk with Matt Robbins and Tim Emery is an evening of old school country and two-steppin' tunes at Empire. Get your broke self there at 8 p.m. with a $5 cover charge.
If you wake Friday and just can't shake the urge to lock a varmint in your sights and pull the trigger, you're in luck - L.L. Bean's Hunting Expo just happens to start today at the retailer's Freeport location. There will be vendors, demos and hands-on activities, and even if you're not quite ready to trade in your comfy old hunting rifle for a new model, it's free to hang out.
If you wake up today and you'd much rather try to save some varmints, plan to attend the End of the World Dance Party tonight at Asylum. It'll cost you a $5 donation to get in but the event benefits the National Audubon Society and the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. Get your groove on and help your winged friends starting at 8 p.m.
If you wake up and just want to listen to some good music tonight, the place to be is The Big Easy, where Adam Waxman, Div Kid and Will Gattis are all part of the weekly singer/songwriter series. The music begins at 6:30 p.m. and there's no cover.
I've got four interesting options for you to check out on the final Saturday of August. In no particular order they are:
PICNIC, the music & arts fest at Lincoln Park in Portland from 11-6 p.m. There will be live music, crafters and artists and its free to wander it.
Kwenu, the street fest in front of the Museum of African Culture on Brown Street in Portland. The festivities go from noon-4 p.m.
Chili-Fest at Wells Junior High. The parking and the admission are both free but it will cost you $5 for a chili tasting and sampling kit (well worth the money, I'm sure). Be there between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Open Range Day at the Royal River Rod & Gun Club on Hatch Road in New Gloucester. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. bring a firearm and try out the 35- and 100-yard ranges. You can also bring your old American flag to participate in the flag retirement ceremony in the afternoon.
Sunday's menu has more chili to be eaten, this time in Scarborough. It's the Southern Maine Regional Chili Cook-Off at Scarborough Downs, which benefits Meals on Wheels. There will be music, dancing and, of course, chili from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Admission is just $5 if you bring two canned good items to donate.
Up in Bethel today you have a chance to see popular Maine singer Anni Clark perform for free. She's at the Bandstand Concert on Bethel Common at 4 p.m. Bring a chair and maybe a cooler.
Finally this weekend, if your morning is free, get yourself to Tommy's Park in Portland where the Veterans for Peace will end their 25th anniversary march and rally at 9 a.m. This group has been vocal about just saying no to war for more than a couple decades now so if you have any ideas you'd like to voice about Iraq and Afghanistan, you can expect to be among friends here.
Karen Beaudoin finds things for you to do in Portland that are FREE (or so darn cheap they're almost free).
