Monday's are tough days, no matter how you slice 'em. So the best thing to do is find a place where you can drown you work sorrows after quittin' time.
Fortunately, plenty of establishments in the Greater Portland area understand how you feel about Mondays and offer some pretty sweet specials. Here are three to check out tonight:
Fore Play in Portland, where the way cool Coors Light 16-ounce aluminum pints go for just $2.25.
Buxton Tavern, where Monday is Men's Night, meaning the apps are half price from 7-close and the Bud and Bud Light drafts are just $1.75 from 4-close.
Asylum in Portland where happy hour rolls from 4-7 p.m. with $2 drafts and half price apps.
Tuesday is still the night for Two at Port City Music Hall. And this week you actually get three: Hutch Heelan, Wyatt King and The Sex machines. Cover is just $2 and so are the drafts. Show starts at 8 p.m.
If you'd like a great cup of java with some artwork on top AND some entertainment, check out Zeile August at Bard Coffee tonight.
The weather's supposed to be good all week so Old Orchard Beach would be a great place to be tonight. Get a cool drink and some hot music at JJ's Eatery Too with Jim Pryor performing from 4-7 for the early out-of-workers and Denny Breau picking things up at 7:30 p.m.
If you're become a fan of Wednesday's Kill the Karoake (and who isn't) you'll have to bring your talent to a new location tonight. The live band version of karaoke has picked up and moved over to Bayside Bowl. It starts at 8 p.m. and there's no cover. The Moosehead drafts are priced right, too, at just $2.
If you happened to be free around the lunch hour today swing over to Portland Public Library to hear Ann Beattie talk about her new novella, "Walks With Men." Beattie is a New Yorker short story writer and she'll do a free reading in Rhines Auditorium.
There isn't much time left for outdoor music, though the weather this week may have you fooled into thinking summer will last forever. Take advantage of every opportunity you have to sit outside near the water and listen to good music. Such an opportunity arises tonight from 6-9 p.m. when Gunther Brown makes music at Portland Lobster Company.
If you haven't spent any time in Naples this summer, you've been missing out. First off, there's water there. Second, there's beer, food and music everywhere you look. On Thursday you should look at Bray's Brew Pub where you can join in on the karaoke hosted by Pete Powers starting at 9 p.m.
In keeping with that theme for the tail end of the work week, how about two more spots where you can show off your skills with the mike. Sing your heart out with Bob Wilson's karaoke at Federal Jacks or stay closer to the city with a visit to Sea Dog Brewing in South Portland for karaoke with Stormin' Norman. Both spots start their events at 10 p.m.
Karen Beaudoin finds things for you to do in Portland that are FREE (or so darn cheap they're almost free).
