I had the great pleasure to attend the Agents of Change Digital Marketing Conference here in Portland last Friday. One of the speakers was Chris Brogan, a social media guru, whom I have followed for some time. Chris spoke about his 7 Tips for Entrepreneurs. I was struck at how those 7 tips apply to how we need to approach our careers, whether we're entrepreneurs or employees. So, with appreciation to Chris Brogan, below are 7 Tips for Your Career...
- Fall in love with not knowing. Chris noted how he loves being the dumbest guy in the room. He gets to ask a lot of questions and learn about what everyone else knows. If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in trouble. You know everything and you're probably not that admired by the others in the room. So ask questions, learn new skills, ask others about their work and their skills.
- Praise the muddy gears. Chris is a car guy. He often writes about the Camaro he bought and how he's learning to work on its engine to maintain top performance. As he noted in his speech, "if you don't get dirty, you're doing it wrong." How does this relate to your career? Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty; do the work that is necessary to keep things moving at top performance.
- Worship the obstacles and challenges. Thrive on the "hard stuff;" don't get complacent. And, this was my favorite quote of the whole conference: "Be an employeepreneur...don't be vital just to the company, be vital to the universe."
- Create systems that work for you. Don't rely on others' systems. Modify them, if you must, to make them work for your needs. This relates to time management, work schedules, naps (!). Find a system that works for the way you work and make it work.
- Build your own media empire. Write blog posts, develop YouTube videos, create podcasts, Tweet; whatever it takes to get your message or story out. However, make sure you give your audience a chance to respond, rather than just pontificate your knowlege (see #1 about being the smartest in the room).
- Connect with your Monchu. Monchu is an Okinawan word that roughly means "one family" or "the family we choose." This is about nurturing the connections with those we care about and who care about us. These are the folks we'll turn to when we need to look for our next role, job, or career. Make sure you build those relationships so they'll be there when you need them. And be there when they need you.
- Own everything. You're in charge of your life and the choices you make. No longer can we afford to relinquish responsibility for our careers to an organization. So own your decisions, take responsibilty for your actions.
